Meet the NTI Work Group
The NTI Work Group fulfills a vital role in reviewing abstracts and recommending program topics and sessions for NTI and API. During the conference, these volunteers serve as valuable resources for participants.
Each day, NTI News will introduce you to different members of this group. Please stop by the Information Center in the Resource Center to chat with them and thank them for their contributions.
Members of the 2008 NTI Work Group are: Mary Frances D. Pate (chair), Janice M. Wojcik (board liaison), Michele L. Avila-Emerson, Phyllis Cerone, Louise R. Cook, Gerard “Jerry” B. Hannibal, Donna Kruse, Barbara B. Pope, Susan Ward and Mary Zellinger.

Pate is a pediatric intensive care clinical nurse specialist with more than 25 years of experience in critical care. She is a faculty member at the Oregon Health & Science University where she mentors senior nursing students in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, teaches in the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education, and is faculty in the doctor of nursing practice program.
A member of AACN since 1993, Pate is active at both the local and national levels. She is the pediatric department editor for AACN Advanced Critical Care and a member of the Greater Portland Chapter, where she serves as education coordinator.
On the national level she was a member of the Healthy Work Environment Work Group; 2004 NTI Work Group; NTI Abstract Review Panel; Pediatric, Advanced Practice and AACN Board Advisory teams; and served as an AACN board community liaison. She has also published in many journals and textbooks on the topic of pediatric critical care. Pate was the recipient of two Datascope-AACN Circle of Excellence awards for Excellence in Collaboration – Nurse to Family and Multidisciplinary Team.

Wojcik has been a member of AACN since she was an undergraduate student. She has been a member of the AACN Board of Directors since July 2005 and is currently also serving on the AACN Certification Corporation Board of Directors. During her board tenure, Wojcik has been a liaison to the NTI, API and Healthy Work Environment work groups, and a member of the AACN Strategic Thinking, Nominating and Resource Development committees. She is currently an AACN ambassador and has served as the Chapter Advisory Team lead and chapter adviser for Region 3. Prior to serving on the AACN board, Wojcik was a member of the NTI Abstract and the Chapter and Membership Award review panels, as well as the Board Advisory and Advanced Practice Advisory teams. She is a former president of AACN’s Northern New Jersey Chapter and is currently a member of several AACN chapters.
Wojcik received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Rutgers University. She is certified in adult critical care nursing and as an acute care nurse practitioner. Currently on staff at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, N.J., Wojcik is an advanced practice nurse in the Critical Care Division and a medical staff affiliate in the Pulmonary Division.

Barbara Pope is proud to say that she is an adult learner, becoming a nurse in her early 40s. She has held CCRN certification since 1988 and CCNS certification since 2003. She is currently the critical care clinical educator at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Jefferson Health System in Philadelphia, Pa.
Pope has been a member of the Southeastern Pennsylvania (SePA) Chapter since 1987 and is a past president. Currently the chapter recording secretary and chairperson of the Certification Committee, she speaks regularly at Trends and NTI. She also received the Pennsylvania Nightingale Award for Excellence in Education in 2000.

Hannibal has more than 20 years of experience in progressive care. He currently serves as a staff nurse on the Progressive Care Unit of the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He received his BSN from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in 1978 and has been certified as a CCRN since 1997.
Hannibal has served in a variety of AACN national volunteer positions including the Award, Scholarship and Continuing Education review panels; Board Advisory Team; and Progressive Care Exam Review Committee. He is especially proud of assisting AACN Certification Corporation in the development of the original PCCN exam. He has been a speaker at NTI on the topics of hospital safety and cardiac monitoring. Hannibal vividly recalls getting a hug from Leo Buscaglia and being sprinkled with fairy dust by Melodie Chenevert at his first NTI.
